"Ain't gonna let nobody"...singing, hope and determination for a better way

My heart has been aching ever since the senseless and horrific killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. And, I must admit, I'm feeling somewhat helpless and completely privileged in my beautiful mountain town of Prescott, Arizona. But after watching former President Obama's Town Hall last night, I am more hopeful. Check out obama.org and the work of Color of Change, My Brother's Keeper Alliance, and fantastic youth leaders such as Playton Patrick. Urge your mayors and other local officials to take the Mayor's Pledge for common sense limits on the use of police force.

I'm also feeling bereft without the power of live group singing during this time of mostly physical distancing. Here is a clip from Valley Unitarian Universalist in Chandler, Arizona a few years back, of a song from the Civil Right's Era, giving us strength to never stop fighting for justice for all. I honor the unknown African Americans living under slavery in this country who, despite unspeakable horrors, knew the power of community and of singing and passed on this incredible music of struggle and hope.

I keep looking for ways to be part of that struggle, which continues today, and draw huge inspiration from the combined efforts of the young leaders and seasoned activists showcased in the Obama Town Hall.
